The New GCI Transfer Station
The new trash transfer station on Great Cranberry Island is open! The station is open two days per week: Monday and Thursday.
From May 15 to September 15, the opening hours are 8 am to 12 noon. Off season and winter, the hours are 8 am to 11 am.
There is an attendant at the station to answer any questions you have.

WE ACCEPT:
Recyclables
- Corrugated Cardboard
- Please flatten boxes
- No waxed cartons
- Newspaper, Mixed Paper, and Box Board
- Including inserts, phone books, and paperback books
- Magazines and Catalogs
- Mail, Office Paper, Brown bags, paper towel rolls
- Shoe, tissue, and cereal boxes
- No waxed milk or drink cartons
- Non-Deposit Glass, #2 Plastic, Tin, and Aluminum
- Throw-away bottles and jars only (all colors)
- Rinsed and cleaned
- Cans and plastic flattened, if possible
- Labels are OK
- No light bulbs, window glass, or mirrors
- Returnable (Deposit) Cans and Bottles
- Clean bottles or cans
- must be labeled as returnable in Maine, or have Maine Tax Stamp
- Cans should not be flattened
- Proceeds from returnables will be donated to a Great Cranberry Island cause. Suggestions are gladly accepted.
Household Waste
All items generated at the home, with the following exceptions:
Household waste does not include:
- Food Waste: All food waste should be composted.
- Recycleables: Recyclables should be kept separate from Household Waste.
- Universal/Hazardous Waste: Described below, this waste is not accepted by the town.
- White Goods and Metal: Accepted separately at no charge
- Furniture: See attendant for fees.
- Construction Waste: See attendant for fees.
Items Requiting Payment
Items accepted for a fee must be paid at the time of drop-off, cash or check, made out to Ed Gray. Some items requiring payment:
- Batteries
- Furniture
- Tires
- Construction debris
We DO NOT accept Universal/Hazardous Waste
What is Universal/Hazardous Waste?
This waste includes items found in the home that require special handling for disposal, such as:
- Rechargable batteries and batteries containing heavy metals such as lead and cadmium (i.e. boat and car batteries)
- Pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides
- Household cleaners (Oven Cleaner, Drain-O, Windex, etc.)
- Partly full aerosol cans
- Acid (battery, muriatic, etc.)
- Motor oil, gasoline, and antifreeze
- Solvents, chemicals, and oil-based paints
- Fluorescent tubes
- Mercury thermostats and mercury thermometers
- Computer screens and televisions
Please do not leave trash outside of the fence
